Upstream Party - Alewife Fish Make a Splash in Northern Maine!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by Nick Hawkins, we witness the incredible migration of alewife fish as they embark on their upstream journey in Northern Maine, USA. It's June, and these spirited creatures are determined to conquer the rushing river and reach their destination. With their sleek bodies glimmering under the sunlight, these ray-finned fish showcase nature's beauty at its finest. As members of the clupeidae family, also known as shads or river herrings, these American natives prove that teamwork makes the dream work. Their synchronized movements create a mesmerizing spectacle against the backdrop of flowing water and a majestic waterfall. These anadromous alewives don't let anything hold them back - not even gravity! As they navigate through freshwater currents with finesse and agility, it's hard not to admire their resilience and determination. They go by many names - bigeye herring, grayback, sawbelly - but today they're simply party animals having a fin-tastic time! This snapshot captures more than just a moment; it encapsulates animal behavior at its most fascinating. So next time you find yourself facing an uphill battle like these alewife fish do every year, remember: if they can swim against the current with such grace and tenacity, so can you!
