EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 20th century, when England's greatest poet, William Shakespeare, was celebrated in a remarkable railway poster. Created between 1900 and 1922 by the Great Central Railway (GCR), this stunning artwork aimed to promote the shortest and quickest route to Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare's birthplace. The poster exudes an air of elegance and sophistication as it showcases a beautifully illustrated map of Stratford-upon-Avon. The intricate details guide our eyes through the town's charming streets, leading us to significant landmarks associated with Shakespeare's life and works. It is evident that this piece was meticulously crafted with great care and attention to detail. As we gaze upon this vintage masterpiece, we are transported back in time when rail travel was at its peak. The GCR sought not only to entice travelers but also pay homage to one of Britain's literary icons. This poster serves as a testament to how deeply ingrained Shakespearean culture has become within English society. Preserved by the National Railway Museum (NRM) in their Pictorial Collection, this print allows us a glimpse into history while reminding us of the enduring legacy left behind by England's greatest poet. It stands as both an artistic marvel and a symbol of cultural heritage that continues to captivate audiences even today.
