EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful photo print, we see Sister Freda Holland standing outside her humble whitewashed cottage in Deganwy, Wales. The image captures a moment of both triumph and tragedy as it was taken shortly after she was awarded the prestigious George Medal for her incredible act of heroism. On that fateful Sunday, April 18th, 1954, at Dellwood Maternity Home in Reading, chaos erupted when a devastating fire engulfed the nursery. With complete disregard for her own safety, Sister Holland fearlessly snatched fifteen newborn babies from their cots as choking smoke filled the air. Her selfless actions saved lives but came at a great cost. Sister Holland suffered severe burns during the rescue and had to undergo skin graft surgery to heal her wounds. Tragically, despite her heroic efforts, thirteen of the infants succumbed to their injuries and tragically passed away. This poignant photograph serves as a testament to Sister Freda's unwavering courage and dedication to nursing. It immortalizes a woman who risked everything without hesitation to protect innocent lives in the face of unimaginable danger. The awarding of the George Medal recognizes not only Sister Freda's bravery but also honors all nurses who tirelessly work day and night caring for others.
