Framed Photos from Memory Lane
Away with the old, and all that is left of Cornelia Street, Splott
Away with the old, and all that is left of Cornelia Street, Splott, is the brick and timber rubble that was once the home of many families, now gone to other districts of the city. Still overshadowing the deserted street is the giant steelworks, that has been the view for the past residents for many years. 12th May 1970

EDITORS COMMENTS
Away with the old, and all that is left of Cornelia Street, Splott, is a haunting reminder of a once vibrant community. This poignant print captures the aftermath of demolition, as brick and timber rubble now dominate what was once home to numerous families. The residents have been forced to seek shelter in other districts of the city, leaving behind their cherished memories. Despite the absence of life on this deserted street, it remains overshadowed by an imposing giant - the steelworks. For years, this industrial behemoth has cast its shadow over Cornelia Street's inhabitants. Its towering presence serves as a constant reminder of both progress and hardship. Taken on 12th May 1970, this image encapsulates an era marked by urban transformation and economic shifts. The debris scattered across the landscape reflects not only physical destruction but also symbolizes societal neglect towards slum areas like Splott. This photograph from Memory Lane Prints transports us back to Cardiff in the 1970s when housing conditions were dire for many working-class families. It serves as a powerful testament to resilience amidst adversity while shedding light on the impact of industry on local communities. Let us remember Cornelia Street's past inhabitants who faced displacement and upheaval during these tumultuous times.
