EDITORS COMMENTS
In this iconic print captured by Dennis Stone, we witness a historic moment in the life of Bishop Desmond Tutu. It is December 8th, 1984, and Bishop Tutu stands at London Airport, ready to embark on a journey that will forever shape his legacy. He is en route to Oslo, Norway, where he will collect his well-deserved Nobel Prize for Peace. Flanked by two remarkable Irish women named Mary Manning and Karen Gearon, the image exudes strength and unity. These three individuals share a common purpose - fighting against injustice and advocating for social rights. As an Anglican bishop and anti-apartheid activist from South Africa, Bishop Tutu's presence alone speaks volumes about his commitment to equality. The photograph captures the anticipation in their eyes as they prepare to board their flight. The airport serves as a symbol of transport and travel - not only physically but also metaphorically representing progress towards justice. This snapshot freezes time during an era when apartheid still plagued South Africa; it reminds us of the immense courage required to challenge such oppressive systems.
