EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to the early morning queues at Toys R Us in Teesside Shopping Park on Sandown Way. The date is November 22nd, 1990, and the excitement in the air is palpable as eager shoppers eagerly await their chance to get their hands on the highly sought-after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles merchandise. The store manager, Brian Ayres, can be seen in the picture personally handing over a set of Turtles to Jed Stephens from Billingham. Jed arrived promptly at 7:45 am, determined not to miss out on this limited daily supply of only 20 sets. It's clear that these beloved heroes in a half shell have captured the hearts of children and collectors alike. During this era of nostalgia and pop culture phenomenon surrounding TMNT, Toys R Us became a hub for fans young and old who were desperate to add these action figures and accessories to their collections. The demand was so high that each day's stock would quickly sell out. This photograph perfectly encapsulates both the anticipation felt by customers waiting outside before opening hours and the dedication shown by store employees like Brian Ayres. It serves as a reminder of an iconic moment in time when toys held such immense power over our imaginations – a testament to how deeply ingrained these characters became within popular culture during the 1990s.
