There were nearly 60 entries for this years procession, including majorettes, brownies, cubs, guides, scouts and brass bands. There were also 30 floats, wagons and vintage cars. The cavalcade lead by special guests actor Bill Owen, who plays Compo, and producer Alan Bell, from the BBC TV series Last of the Summer Wine - went from Holmfirth Drill Hall along the main road to Holmbridge. " It was the best procession we have had, " said procession committee chairman Mr David Lewis. " It was out of this world." The floats all carried flaming torches supplied by Standard Fireworks and were decked out with fairy lights. Holmfirth and Meltham Lions made collections along the route, and raised a record £ 602.12. The profits will be distributed among youth groups and bands in the valley. 14th September 1986

EDITORS COMMENTS
The red Indians are on the march again. . . or at least members of the 1st Holme Valley Torchlight Procession at the weekend. There were nearly 60 entries for this year's procession, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere in Holmfirth. The participants included majorettes, brownies, cubs, guides, scouts, and brass bands who all came together to celebrate community spirit. The highlight of the procession was the presence of special guests actor Bill Owen, known for his role as Compo in the beloved BBC TV series Last of the Summer Wine, and producer Alan Bell. Their involvement added an extra touch of excitement to an already thrilling event. Led by Mr David Lewis, chairman of the procession committee, this year's cavalcade made its way from Holmfirth Drill Hall along the main road to Holmbridge. The floats were adorned with fairy lights and carried flaming torches supplied by Standard Fireworks. It was truly a sight to behold! Not only did this event bring joy to those who attended but it also served a greater purpose. Alongside their participation in this festive occasion, members from Holmfirth and Meltham Lions collected donations along the route which amounted to a record-breaking £602.12! These funds will be distributed among various youth groups and bands in our valley. Looking back on that memorable day on September 14th, 1986 fills us with pride as we remember how our community came together for such a wonderful cause.
