EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in Speke, Liverpool during the 1970s. In the image, a young child stands in awe before what local children have affectionately named "Speke Castle" - a £22,000 playground that has become an integral part of their lives. However, this seemingly innocent scene takes on a darker undertone as we learn that this playground has been condemned by the National Playing Fields Association for its grotesque danger. The photograph beautifully juxtaposes the innocence of childhood with the harsh reality of neglect and potential harm. The child's wide-eyed gaze reflects both wonderment and curiosity about this forbidden place they are not allowed to enjoy fully. Graffiti adorns some parts of the structure, showcasing how even at such a tender age, these children have claimed ownership over their beloved play area. Stephen Shakeshaft's expert lens captures not only the physicality of this decaying playground but also its emotional significance within Speke's community. It serves as a reminder of how vital safe recreational spaces are for children growing up in cities like Liverpool during this era. As we delve into history through Memory Lane Prints' collection, let us reflect on how far we have come in prioritizing safety and well-being for our future generations while cherishing moments frozen in time like these.
