EDITORS COMMENTS
Turkish Scouts Brave the Elements at Cleveland's International Jamboree In this print from 20th July 1987, we witness the indomitable spirit of a group of Turkish scouts who overcame appalling conditions to join the vibrant atmosphere of Cleveland's international jamboree. Despite their challenging circumstances, this determined contingent of 42 young scouts and leaders from Turkey fearlessly pitched their tents at Wynyard Park alongside 1500 other youngsters. Captured in this snapshot are four members of the Turkish group: Ahmet, Gokan, Tolga, and Alper. As they gaze up at the sky with hopeful anticipation, these resilient boys test for rain clouds above them. With fingers crossed and hearts full of optimism, they yearn for clear skies that will allow them to fully immerse themselves in all that lies ahead. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the unbreakable bonds forged through outdoor leisure activities like camping. It showcases how children from different corners of the world can come together under one common purpose – to learn, grow, and create lasting memories. Preserved by Teesside Archive's Memory Lane Prints collection, this photograph encapsulates not only an era but also a timeless message: no matter our backgrounds or challenges faced along the way if we stand united against adversity – even amidst unpredictable weather – we can conquer any obstacle that comes our way.
