EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to the 1980s, where a football match between Wales and Scotland took place at Ninian Park. The image captures a heartwarming moment before the game as the late Jock Stein, former Scottish manager, shares a lighthearted joke with Welsh goalkeeper Neville Southall. The atmosphere on the pitch is electric, filled with anticipation and excitement for what promises to be an intense match. Both Stein and Southall wear smiles on their faces, showcasing their camaraderie despite being rivals in this sporting event. Their laughter echoes through the stadium, momentarily transcending national boundaries and reminding us of the unifying power of sport. Little did anyone know that tragedy would strike later during this fateful game. As fate would have it, Jock Stein collapsed and tragically passed away while managing his team from the sidelines. This photograph serves as a bittersweet reminder of not only that unforgettable day but also of how fleeting life can be. As we reflect upon this powerful image captured by Western Mail and Echo Copyright Image for Mirrorpix, we are reminded of the profound impact sports can have on our lives - bringing people together in moments of joy or sorrow.
