EDITORS COMMENTS
Bill Harrison and his wife Jeanne, a retired senior couple, are captured in this nostalgic print from Memory Lane Prints. Taken on the 14th of July 1982, it showcases the first all-day service by Tanfield Railway from a brand new station at Sunniside, Gateshead to Marley Hill Colliery. In the image, Bill and Jeanne can be seen standing on the platform with excitement radiating from their smiling faces. They are both dressed impeccably for the occasion; Bill dons a hat while Jeanne wears stylish glasses that add an air of sophistication to their appearance. As they eagerly await their journey aboard one of the steam engines, you can almost feel their anticipation building. The carriages behind them hint at a bygone era when public transport was more than just convenience—it was an experience filled with charm and elegance. With hands raised in joyful waves towards loved ones bidding them farewell or perhaps simply acknowledging fellow passengers nearby, Bill and Jeanne embody happiness as they embark on this memorable adventure together. This photograph is not only a testament to the history of transportation but also serves as a reminder of simpler times when train travel held an undeniable allure. It captures two people who were fortunate enough to witness this momentous event firsthand—a snapshot frozen in time that will forever evoke feelings of nostalgia.
