EDITORS COMMENTS
Feast your eyes on one of the last links of the steam train era. This print takes us back to a time when transport and industry were intertwined, capturing the essence of an era that is slowly fading away. Two mid-adult Caucasian men stand proudly in front of a magnificent steam train at Carlisle's old water shed in Upperby sidings. The image evokes a sense of nostalgia and admiration for these powerful machines that once dominated our railways. The men, perhaps railway enthusiasts or workers themselves, exude a deep appreciation for this piece of history before them. It is as if they are bidding farewell to an era that shaped their lives. However, there is also a tinge of sadness surrounding this photograph. We learn that this will be the last time anyone will witness such scenes firsthand, as the demolition date looms near - 11th July 1975. The impending destruction adds weight to every detail captured within this frame – from the intricate design on the locomotive to the worn-out tracks beneath it. This print not only captures two individuals and their connection with trains but serves as a reminder of how public transport has evolved over time. It invites us to reflect on our journey towards modernity while honoring those who played pivotal roles in shaping our transportation systems.
