EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the legendary Eusebio Ferreira Da Silva during his prime in the 1960s. Hailing from Mozambique, a former Portuguese territory, Eusebio rose to prominence and left an indelible mark on Portuguese football. Starting his career with Sporting Lourenco-Marques, a nursery club of Sporting Lisbon, he quickly caught the attention of Benfica, their fierce rival. Eusebio's talent shone brightly on the world stage as he became the top scorer at the 1966 World Cup held in England, netting an impressive nine goals. His dominance continued domestically as he claimed numerous accolades including being crowned Portuguese League's top scorer for seven consecutive years between 1964 and 1973. Not only did Eusebio excel within Portugal but also across Europe. He secured two European Golden Shoe awards in 1968 and 1973 by scoring an astonishing total of 42 and 40 goals respectively. Throughout his illustrious career spanning over seven hundred games, this extraordinary athlete found the back of the net a staggering 727 times. However, despite his incredible achievements on the field, Eusebio was forced to retire prematurely in 1974 due to a knee injury. In this remarkable photograph taken in May 1968 during his time in England, we witness Eusebio's serious demeanor that mirrored his dedication and passion for football. This image serves as a testament to one of football's greatest icons whose legacy continues to inspire generations
