EDITORS COMMENTS
In this nostalgic print from August 1975, we see fourteen-year-old Richard Reynolds of London showcasing his adventurous spirit and love for animals. With a beaming smile on his face, Richard carries his vibrant seven-year-old macaw parrot named Bertieon on his bicycle handlebars while enjoying a holiday in the scenic North Devon. The image captures the essence of carefree childhood summers, where young hearts were filled with excitement and curiosity. Richard's choice to bring along his feathered friend adds an exotic touch to their journey through the countryside. The colorful plumage of Bertieon beautifully contrasts with Richard's casual attire - sunglasses perched atop their heads and shirts fluttering in the wind. This snapshot not only showcases the bond between humans and animals but also highlights the joyous moments shared during family vacations. It reminds us of simpler times when children found delight in exploring new places and creating unforgettable memories. Hicklin's photograph perfectly encapsulates teenage enthusiasm, humor, and a sense of adventure as they embark on this unique mode of transportation together. Whether it was a short ride or an extended trip, one can imagine that every pedal stroke brought laughter-filled conversations between Richard and Bertieon. This image serves as a delightful reminder that sometimes all you need is good company – even if it comes in the form of a charming macaw parrot perched on your bicycle handlebars.
