Peace 1945 - Londoners sleep through the early hours of the morning after a night of celebrations.
At 3pm on 8 May 1945, Prime Minister, Winston Churchill announced that the war in Europe would end at midnight. London erupted into a massive chorus of jubilation and celebration. Mr Churchill was greeted by huge cheering crowds wherever he went and the King was kept busy by a crowd outside Buckingham Palace who made him keep returning to the balcony to receive their accolades. Even his own daughters, escorted by Palace guards, joined the crowd in shouting for the King. All licensing laws in the capital were revoked for the evening and the celebrations went on well into the small hours. All that remained then was the question of how to get home

Peace 1945 - Londoners Embrace the Dawn of a New Era
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the profound aftermath of an unforgettable night in London. As the first rays of sunlight gently caress the city's streets, a sense of tranquility blankets the slumbering metropolis. The previous evening had been one filled with unbridled joy and jubilation as news spread like wildfire that World War II in Europe was finally over. At precisely 3pm on May 8th, 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared victory and liberation from years of conflict. London erupted into a symphony of cheers and celebration; its citizens rejoiced with an indomitable spirit that echoed through every corner. Mr. Churchill himself basked in adoration wherever he went, while King George VI found solace amidst a crowd outside Buckingham Palace who demanded his presence on their balcony time and again. As darkness gave way to dawn, exhaustion claimed even the most resilient souls. Yet remnants of revelry lingered in the air as revellers sought ways to return home after hours spent commemorating this historic occasion. Captured by John Heddon's lens, this poignant image encapsulates both triumph and weariness—a testament to humanity's resilience amidst adversity.
