EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Pollution Attacks Salisbury Cathedral: Scaffolding to Cover Spire for 10 Years" we are transported back to March 1985, where the iconic Salisbury Cathedral stands tall amidst a battle against pollution. The image showcases the cathedral's majestic spire, which is about to be concealed by scaffolding for an extensive period of time. Steeplejack Roy takes center stage in this snapshot, positioned just four feet away from the Sphere atop the towering spire. His presence not only emphasizes the scale and grandeur of this architectural masterpiece but also highlights the immense dedication required to protect it from harm. During the 1980s, pollution posed a significant threat to historical structures like Salisbury Cathedral. To shield its delicate stonework and intricate detailing from further damage caused by environmental pollutants, authorities took measures that involved enveloping its soaring spire with scaffolding. This protective cocoon would remain in place for an astonishing ten years. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both humanity's impact on our surroundings and our unwavering commitment to preserving cultural heritage. It captures a moment frozen in time when man-made intervention became necessary to safeguard one of England's most cherished religious landmarks. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by Mirrorpix through their Memory Lane Prints collection, we are reminded of how architecture intertwines with history and religion – standing as testament not only to human ingenuity but also as guardians of faith across generations.
