EDITORS COMMENTS
This lantern slide depicts a train making its way towards Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, during the late 1890s. At the time, this region was known as Rhodesia, named after Cecil Rhodes, the British businessman and politician who played a significant role in the colonization of Southern Africa. The train, a marvel of engineering in the African bush, symbolizes the expanding reach of British influence and the growing transportation infrastructure that connected various parts of the British South Africa Company's territories. The image, part of Box 288 from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to an era of exploration and discovery. Bulawayo, meaning "place of the rain," was founded in 1893 and served as the capital city of Rhodesia until 1923, when it was replaced by Salisbury (now Harare). The city was strategically located along the railway line, making it an essential hub for trade and commerce. This lantern slide, with its rich historical context, provides a fascinating insight into the development of transportation systems in Zimbabwe during the late 19th century. It serves as a reminder of the significant role that trains played in shaping the country's history and connecting its people, long before the advent of modern modes of transportation.
