EDITORS COMMENTS
Every Man Must Enlist: A Call to Arms in Welsh During World War I This powerful and evocative poster, titled "Syd yr Oedd I'r Rhagor I'r Gwyr (Every Man Must Enlist)" was produced by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in 1915 during the first year of the Great War. The Welsh language version of the poster is a testament to the committee's efforts to engage the Welsh population in the war effort. The poster features an image of a hand, clad in a Welsh national costume, reaching out towards an orange and green background. The colors of the background represent the Welsh flag, and the hand holds a daffodil, a symbol of Wales. The text in the poster, written in both Welsh and English, reads "Syd yr Oedd I'r Rhagor I'r Gwyr (Every Man Must Enlist)" and "Join the Army." The use of the Welsh language in the poster was an intentional move to appeal to the patriotic sentiments of the Welsh people. The poster was designed to encourage every able-bodied man to enlist in the army and contribute to the war effort. The image of the hand reaching out towards the viewer, combined with the use of the national colors and symbols, creates a sense of unity and solidarity among the Welsh people. The poster is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the people of Wales during World War I. It also highlights the importance of language and cultural identity in times of national crisis. The poster's message remains relevant today, as we reflect on the history and lessons of the past, and the ongoing importance of unity and patriotism in times of challenge.
