EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant illustration by Fortunio Matania, titled "Good-bye, Old Man," captures the heart-wrenching moment when a soldier bids farewell to his faithful horse during World War I. The soldier is depicted as he leans over to stroke the head of his loyal companion, who has been wounded in battle and is nearing the end of its life. The bond between man and animal is beautifully portrayed in this emotional scene, as the soldier expresses gratitude and sorrow for their time together on the battlefield. The horse gazes up at its master with eyes full of trust and love, embodying unwavering loyalty even in the face of death. Matania's skillful use of detail and emotion brings this touching moment to life, evoking empathy from viewers who can feel the weight of loss and sacrifice that war entails. The setting sun in the background adds a sense of finality to the scene, emphasizing that this goodbye is truly a farewell. As we reflect on this illustration from 1922, we are reminded of the countless soldiers and animals who have served bravely in wars throughout history. Their stories deserve to be remembered and honored, just like this soldier bidding adieu to his beloved old friend.
