EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the West Derby Union Nurses Home at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, as it appeared in 1925. The West Derby Union, a local authority responsible for social welfare in Liverpool, opened the hospital in 1915. Initially designed for the care of chronic and bed-ridden cases, the home later transformed into a children's hospital, providing essential medical services to the community. During the two World Wars, the hospital also served as a military facility, offering care and support to wounded soldiers. The image showcases the grandeur and dignity of the building, with its imposing facade and meticulously manicured gardens. The nurses, dressed in their crisp uniforms, can be seen tending to their patients with compassion and dedication. The West Derby Union Nurses Home at Alder Hey Hospital played a significant role in the history of Liverpool and its healthcare system. Its transformation from a home for the chronically ill to a children's hospital and military hospital during times of war demonstrates the adaptability and resilience of the institution. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the vital role that healthcare workers and institutions have played in caring for the sick and injured throughout history.
