EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning tapestry, titled "Virtues Win the Battle to Vices," is a captivating masterpiece from the early modern era, created around 1510 in Brussels. Measuring an impressive 420 x 798 cm, this intricately woven artwork is a testament to the skill and artistry of Flemish textile makers during the Western European history. The tapestry is the seventh piece in the series known as the "Redemption of Man" or "Vices and Virtues." At the center of the composition is the prophet Zechariah, depicted in the midst of a dramatic crucifixion scene. Zechariah's courage and faith are evident as he stands firm against the assault of the vices, who are portrayed as chaotic and menacing figures. Yet, the virtues, symbolized by angelic beings, rally around Zechariah, bolstering his resolve and ultimately securing their victory over the vices. The tapestry is made of silk and wool, with an astonishing seven threads per cm, resulting in a richly textured and vibrant image. This exquisite piece was manufactured in Brussels during the height of the Flemish art movement and later found its home in the Cathedral of St. Mary in Burgos, Spain, in the Castile and Leon region. The tapestry's intricate details and masterful execution serve as a reminder of the profound impact of Christian art and textiles on Western culture during this era. This tapestry is not only a decorative piece but also a significant historical artifact, providing valuable insights into the artistic, religious, and cultural milieu of the early modern period. Its intricate design and masterful execution continue to captivate and inspire viewers, making it a true treasure of the decorative arts and textiles from the Western history.
