EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the view of Poperinge, a peaceful West Flanders town in Belgium, transformed by the harsh realities of the First World War in February 1915. Taken from the church tower, the photograph offers a bird's-eye perspective of the town, with its white buildings and cobblestone streets now obscured by the thick, grey smoke rising from the distance. The source of the smoke is a motor tractor, likely used for transporting supplies or troops amidst the chaos of war. The serene landscape, once dotted with farms and fields, now bears the scars of conflict, with the destruction and devastation evident in the photograph. The Great War had reached Poperinge, a town that had previously been known for its tranquility and picturesque beauty. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of war on communities and the lives of individuals, leaving behind a trail of smoke and destruction in its wake.
