EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph, captured around the turn of the twentieth century, transports us to the picturesque coastal commune of Veules-les-Roses in the Normandy region of France. Nestled within this idyllic scene is the charming residence of Maison Victor-Hugo, named after the renowned French poet, Victor Hugo. Located in the Seine-Maritime department, Veules-les-Roses is known for its stunning beaches, quaint houses, and the tranquil Veule River. The commune's name, meaning 'Roses of Veules,' is a testament to the beautiful flora that thrives in the area. Maison Victor-Hugo, a humble yet captivating house, stands as a testament to the rich history of this charming village. The house, with its thatched roof and traditional French architectural elements, blends seamlessly into the natural beauty of its surroundings. The photograph, taken circa 1906, showcases the house as a quaint retreat, surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle embrace of the sea. Victor Hugo, a literary giant, spent a significant portion of his later life in exile in Normandy, from 1851 to 1870. He found solace in the natural beauty of the region and wrote some of his most famous works during this time, including "Les Contemplations" and "Toilers of the Sea." Maison Victor-Hugo, though not the actual residence of the poet, serves as a reminder of his deep connection to this enchanting corner of France. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to imagine the tranquility and inspiration that once filled the air around Maison Victor-Hugo and the beautiful commune of Veules-les-Roses.
