EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II rode her horse Burmese for the last time in the Trooping the Colour ceremony in 1986. The annual event, held in London's Horse Guards Parade, is a grand military tradition that marks the monarch's official birthday. Dating back to the 17th century, the ceremony involves the monarch inspecting her troops in a parade, followed by a ride through the ranks to signify her acceptance of their duty and loyalty. In this photograph, Queen Elizabeth II, dressed in her regal attire, sits confidently atop Burmese, her trusted steed. Surrounded by the grandeur of the British military, the Queen is flanked by her personal aides and escorted by the Household Cavalry, their distinctive bearskin hats and red tunics adding to the traditional spectacle. The soldiers stand at rigid attention, their ranks perfectly aligned on the ground, as the Queen passes by. The 1980s, and specifically the 80s, were a significant period in Queen Elizabeth II's reign, with this decade marking her Silver Jubilee in 1977, celebrating 25 years on the throne. By the time of this ceremony in 1986, the Queen had ruled for over 30 years, making her one of the longest-reigning monarchs in British history. This image, therefore, represents not only the end of an era in the Trooping the Colour ceremony but also a poignant moment in the Queen's long and storied reign.
