Trafalgar Square's Iconic Lions: A Historical Milestone in 1867 This evocative image captures the momentous occasion when the four iconic lions were finally installed at the foot of Lord Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London, in 1867. The lions, a gift from Sir Edwin Landseer to the people of London, had been the subject of much anticipation and debate since their unveiling at the Royal Academy in 1864. The lions, modeled after Asiatic lions in the London Zoo, were initially intended to be placed on top of Nelson's Column. However, due to structural concerns and public outcry, they were ultimately positioned at the base instead. The decision was met with relief and enthusiasm by the public, who had grown fond of the majestic creatures during their time on display at the Academy. The installation of the lions was marked by a grand ceremony, attended by thousands of Londoners and visitors. The event was captured in this cartoon by renowned illustrator, Randolph Caldecott, published in Punch magazine. The image shows the lions being carefully maneuvered into place, with onlookers gathered around in awe and excitement. This historical moment marked the completion of Trafalgar Square's transformation into a symbol of British national pride and identity. The lions have since become a beloved and enduring feature of the square, attracting millions of visitors each year and serving as a reminder of London's rich history and cultural heritage.
