EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the McDonnell Douglas C-9B Skytrain II, military registration number 160050 (MSN 47699), of the United States Navy's Fleet Logistic Support Squadron VR-58, in flight during the early 1990s. The C-9B Skytrain II, a variant of the popular C-9 Skytrain, is a versatile transport aircraft used primarily for the transport of cargo, passengers, and medical evacuation. The image showcases the distinctive features of the C-9B, including its large cargo door, twin engines, and the distinctive hump on the fuselage that houses the aerial refueling probe. The aircraft's colorful markings, featuring the VR-58 squadron insignia and the United States Navy's "Measles" camouflage scheme, add to its visual appeal. The C-9B Skytrain II was a critical asset for the US Navy, enabling the rapid deployment and resupply of naval forces around the world. Its ability to fly long distances and in adverse weather conditions made it an essential component of the Navy's logistical support capabilities. The photograph, taken circa 1992, is part of The Tony Lovelock Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online. Lovelock, a renowned aviation photographer, captured this image during a time when the C-9B Skytrain II was a common sight in the skies over the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, supporting US naval operations around the world.
