EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history at the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery works in Plaistow Wharf, off Silvertown, North Woolwich, east London. The image shows a coastal barge gracefully sailing by the famous industrial site along the River Thames in February of 1939.
The scene is filled with historical significance as it showcases the bustling activity of sugar cultivation and manufacture during the 1930s and 1940s. The towering structures of the refinery loom large in the background, symbolizing a time when industrialization was at its peak along this stretch of river.
Despite its beauty, there is also an underlying sense of pollution and environmental impact present in this photograph. The smokestacks billowing out plumes of smoke serve as a reminder of the cost that often comes with progress and development.
Overall, this image serves as a window into a bygone era when companies like Tate & Lyle played a significant role in shaping not only East London's economy but also its cultural landscape. It is a snapshot frozen in time that tells a story of industry, innovation, and change along one of England's most iconic waterways.
