EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative aerial photograph, the Swedish Evangelical Mission Station at Geleb, now situated in Eritrea, East Africa, is depicted in its early 1910s splendor. The mission station, nestled in a lush valley, is a testament to the rich history of Christian evangelism and conversion in Africa during the 1910s. The missionaries, predominantly Swedish, brought the message of Christianity and the gospel to the local population, constructing a community that would become a beacon of faith and hope. The image reveals a collection of buildings, including the central mission station, surrounded by traditional African huts. The station's architecture is a blend of European and African influences, with the missionaries' structures standing proudly amidst the huts of the local community. The valley's verdant landscape adds a serene backdrop to the scene, further emphasizing the harmony between the missionaries and the local people. The Swedish Evangelical Mission Society, established in 1859, played a significant role in spreading Christianity in Africa. The society's missionaries, driven by their religious convictions, dedicated their lives to sharing the teachings of Christianity with the indigenous population. The mission station at Geleb was one of their most successful endeavors, serving as a symbol of the enduring impact of religious evangelism on the African continent. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, capturing the essence of a time when faith, culture, and community intertwined to shape the history of East Africa. The Swedish Evangelical Mission Station at Geleb stands as a reminder of the transformative power of religious beliefs and the enduring connections forged between people from diverse backgrounds.
