EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Pierre Andre de Suffren, Marquis de Saint-Tropez (1729-1788), a renowned French naval officer and admiral of the Royal Navy. Born in Antibes, France, Suffren began his naval career at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional skill and bravery in battle. Suffren's most notable achievements came during the American Revolutionary War, where he served under the French navy. He played a crucial role in the defense of the French colonies in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean against British forces. In 1778, he signed a treaty with the United States, making France an official ally in the war. One of Suffren's most famous victories was the Battle of Sainte-Lucie in 1778, where he successfully defended a French fort against a British fleet twice its size. He continued to serve France with distinction until his death in 1788. This print captures Suffren in his prime, dressed in the uniform of a French naval officer, with a determined expression and a sword at his side. The backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea adds to the sense of adventure and heroism associated with Suffren's legacy. The print is a testament to his military prowess and his enduring place in French naval history.
