EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and evocative image depicts the moment of St. Stephen's martyrdom as described in the New Testament book of Acts (Chapter 7). St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is shown here being stoned by a mob of enraged men. Dressed in the robes of a deacon, Stephen gazes upwards in serene acceptance, his eyes closed in devotion as the first stone strikes his chest. The other men in the crowd, some of whom are shown in the act of throwing or preparing to throw stones, are depicted with expressions of anger and determination. The scene is set against a backdrop of rocks and boulders, adding to the sense of harshness and brutality. The image is a poignant reminder of the persecution and suffering endured by early Christians, and the unwavering faith and courage of St. Stephen in the face of death. This print, created in the 17th century, is a testament to the enduring power of the biblical narrative and the continued relevance of the story of St. Stephen to the Christian faith.
