EDITORS COMMENTS
The Sporty Lacrosse Girl: A Snapshot of Women's Sport and Fashion in the 1910s This photograph, titled "The Sporty Lacrosse Girl," transports us back to the early 1910s, a time when women's participation in sports was gaining popularity and fashion was undergoing a significant transformation. The image showcases a young, athletic woman in the midst of a lacrosse game, her intense focus and determination evident as she holds her lacrosse stick, poised for the next play. The woman's sporty attire reflects the changing trends of the era. Her purple and mauve knitwear, consisting of a cardigan and a woollen hat, is both stylish and practical, allowing for ease of movement while providing warmth. The color palette, popular during this period, adds a touch of elegance and femininity to her athletic appearance. The photograph also highlights the growing acceptance of women in sports during this time. Lacrosse, a game traditionally played by men, was beginning to attract female players, and this image serves as a testament to their passion and dedication. The caption, "The Fellows like the girl of sport, she's such a jolly, chummy sort," suggests that women's athleticism was not only appreciated but also admired by their male counterparts. As we gaze at this photograph, we are reminded of the rich history of women's sports and fashion in the early 20th century, a time when women began to challenge societal norms and redefine what it meant to be a sporty, fashionable woman.
