EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored illustration showcases the enchanting beauty of Lady Banks' Rose, Rosa banksiae var. lutea, with its abundant display of small, vibrant yellow blooms. The illustration, created by renowned botanical artist Edwin Dalton Smith and expertly engraved by F.W. Smith, is taken from Charles McIntosh's esteemed horticultural publication, "Flora and Pomona," published in 1829. Charles McIntosh (1794-1864), a Scottish gardener to European aristocracy and royalty, was a leading figure in the world of horticulture during the 19th century. He authored numerous books on gardening, sharing his extensive knowledge and passion for plants with the world. Edwin Dalton Smith, a skilled botanical artist, was a frequent collaborator of Robert Sweet and Benjamin Maund. His meticulous drawings brought to life the intricacies and nuances of various plant species, captivating the attention of scholars, gardeners, and collectors alike. The illustration showcases the Lady Banks' Rose in all its glory, with its delicate yellow petals unfurling from their dark green stems. The engraving process, which involved transferring the artist's drawing onto a copper plate and etching the lines to create a print, further enhances the detail and depth of the image. The Lady Banks' Rose, Rosa banksiae var. lutea, is a climbing rose that produces an abundance of small, fragrant yellow flowers. It was named in honor of Lady Banks, the wife of Sir Joseph Banks, who was a prominent figure in the world of botany and exploration during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This stunning illustration is a testament to the beauty and richness of the natural world, as well as the dedication and expertise of the botanical artists and horticulturists of the past. It offers a glimpse into the history of gardening and botany, and serves as a reminder of the enduring allure of the flower garden.
