EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Godfrey Kneller: A Portrait of the Artist (1646-1723) This striking oval print depicts Sir Godfrey Kneller, a renowned British painter who was born in Germany. Kneller's long, curly hair frames his face in this side view, giving an insight into his distinctive appearance. The artist is shown wearing a simple, dark robe, with a white collar, signifying his status and profession. Born in 1646, Kneller's artistic career spanned over seven decades, making him one of the most influential painters in British history. He is best known for his portraits of the English nobility, including King Charles II and Queen Henrietta Maria. Kneller's innovative techniques and ability to capture the essence of his subjects made him a favorite among the aristocracy. Despite being born in Germany, Kneller's family moved to England when he was just a child. He studied under the renowned painter Peter Lely before setting up his own studio in London in 1676. Kneller's unique style, which combined the Baroque grandeur of the Continent with the more naturalistic approach of the English tradition, quickly gained him a reputation as a master painter. Throughout his career, Kneller received numerous accolades and honors, including knighthood in 1686. He continued to paint until his death in 1723, leaving behind a legacy of over 2,000 portraits that continue to captivate audiences today. This print is a testament to Kneller's enduring influence on the art world and his place in history as a pioneering figure in British painting.
