EDITORS COMMENTS
Sinter Klaas, the beloved Dutch Santa Claus, is depicted in this charming illustration from the cover of Look and Learn issue no. 154, dated December 26, 1964. Unlike the jolly, rotund figure of American Santa Claus, Sinter Klaas is traditionally portrayed as a thin, bearded man dressed in a bishop's robe and red mitre. He carries a staff adorned with a golden ball and wears a broad-brimmed hat. Originating from the Dutch Saint Nicholas, Sinter Klaas is a figure of Dutch folklore who brings gifts to children on December 6, the feast day of Saint Nicholas. The legend of Sinter Klaas has its roots in the 14th century and has been an integral part of Dutch culture ever since. The illustration captures the magical atmosphere of the Sinter Klaas celebration. A snowy landscape is in the background, with children gathered around a fireplace, eagerly anticipating the arrival of their gifts. Sinter Klaas, with a kind and mischievous smile, looks on as he prepares to distribute presents. The warm colors and intricate details of the illustration bring the scene to life, transporting us to a cozy and enchanting Dutch winter scene. The image is a beautiful representation of the enduring tradition of Sinter Klaas and the joy he brings to children during the holiday season.
