EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white illustration captures the scene of a shoe shiner at work in the early 1900s. The shoe shiner is depicted on his knees in front of a small, rickety stand, which bears the company name, "Day & Martin," written in faded letters. The man's focus is intently on the shoes before him, meticulously scrubbing and polishing them to a shine. A lady stands nearby, her attention divided between the shoe shiner and a small, playful dog at her feet. The dog, with its ears perked up and tail wagging, seems to be enjoying the bustling atmosphere of the scene. In the background, a man on a bicycle can be seen passing by, adding to the sense of activity and movement. This illustration offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era when a simple shoe shine was an essential errand for many. The use of light and shadow, as well as the intricate details in the illustration, add to its historical significance and make it a fascinating addition to any collection.
