Senegal - Rebellion at Thies - Sarithia Dieye captured
The circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the Thies rebellion remain obscure. An article at the time said that the rebellion began after the sentencing to 15 days in jail of Diery Fall. He did not accept the charge and with associates, attacked and killed a young colonial officer, Monsieur Chautemps. Two days later, Diery Fall was caught and killed by his own brother who cut off his head and forearm to bring the Pouvergue administrator who had them exposed publicly as a warning and intimidation. Another assassin, Sarithia Dieye was caught a few days later at St. Mary of Bathurst in Gambia. All that remains of this dramatic episode are these remarkable postcards. After being caught on camera, Canar Fall (head of Western Baol province), his brother and " courtiers" were all deported to Guyana. This photograph shows Sarithia Dieye having been captured and Meissa Lahobe, who aided the arrest of Dieye at Bathurst. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment of arrest of Sarithia Dieye during the Thies rebellion in Senegal in 1904. The circumstances leading to the rebellion are shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that the sentencing of Diery Fall to 15 days in jail for an unspecified offense sparked the unrest. Fall and his associates, including Dieye, attacked and killed a young colonial officer, Monsieur Chautemps, in retaliation. Two days after the officer's death, Fall was killed by his own brother, who presented his head and forearm as a warning to the Pouvergue administrator. Dieye, another assassin involved in the rebellion, was captured a few days later at St. Mary of Bathurst in Gambia. This photograph shows Dieye being apprehended by Meissa Lahobe, who had aided in his arrest. The rebellion resulted in the deportation of Canar Fall, Dieye's brother, and their courtiers to Guyana. The image is a poignant reminder of the violent clashes between colonial powers and local populations in Africa during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The photograph's haunting composition and the somber expressions of the individuals involved underscore the gravity of the events depicted.
