EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, dated 1865, showcases the vibrant and intricately patterned Common Rudd, scientifically known as Scardinius erythropthalmus. A popular freshwater fish native to Europe, the Common Rudd is also known by various other names such as Redeye and Finscale due to its distinctive red eyes and fin markings. The Common Rudd is a member of the Cyprinidae family, which includes over 2,000 species of freshwater fish. This species is characterized by its silver-gold body, with pinkish hues on the sides and a striking red eye that stands out against its scales. The Victorian era, during which this photograph was taken, was a time of great fascination with the natural world. Collecting and documenting various species was a popular pastime among the wealthy and educated, and fish were no exception. This print, likely intended for display in a private collection or study, offers a glimpse into the natural history of the Common Rudd during this time. The Common Rudd is a valuable species in both ecological and recreational contexts. It plays an essential role in freshwater ecosystems as a food source for larger fish and birds, and is also a popular game fish for anglers. Its beauty and unique characteristics continue to captivate people today, making it a beloved species in the world of freshwater fish.
