EDITORS COMMENTS
Rue Michelet, formerly known as Avenue Mustapha, is a historic and picturesque street located in the heart of Algiers, the largest city in Algeria and the capital of North Africa. This aerial view, captured circa 1910, showcases the vibrant and eclectic mix of architecture and greenery that once defined this bustling avenue. The image reveals a wide, tree-lined boulevard, with Rue Michelet stretching out before us, its tramlines neatly demarcating the path for the vintage trams that once transported residents and visitors around the city. The avenue is framed by a diverse array of buildings, some with European influences, others displaying traditional North African design. The lush canopy of trees provides a striking contrast to the red-tiled rooftops, creating a harmonious blend of nature and urban development. The intricate details of the buildings, from their ornate balconies to their intricate stonework, are a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Algiers. Avenue Mustapha was a hub of activity during the 1910s, with its cafes, shops, and theaters attracting locals and tourists alike. This aerial view offers a unique perspective on a bygone era, inviting us to imagine the sounds, smells, and energy that once filled the streets of this remarkable city.
