EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph from the Royal Archives, we witness a moment of historical significance as Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen of England, bids farewell to her bridesmaids after her wedding to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on November 20, 1947. The young Princess, resplendent in her going-away outfit, stands in the sunlit room of Buckingham Palace, surrounded by her attendants in their ivory silk tulle bridesmaid dresses. The Princess's outfit, designed by the renowned British couturier Norman Hartnell, was inspired by the romantic paintings of Winterhalter, Tuxen, and Sir George Hayter that adorned the walls of Buckingham Palace. The love-in-the-mist blue crepe dress, with its high-waisted silhouette and full skirt, was both elegant and timeless. The coat in velours cloth, with its matching shade of blue, provided a touch of sophistication and warmth. The pièce de résistance of the ensemble was the beret, trimmed with ostrich feather pom poms and curved quills, which added a playful and whimsical touch to the outfit. The bridesmaids, dressed in Norman Hartnell's ivory silk tulle creations, were inspired by the same artistic influences that informed the Princess's going-away outfit. Their dresses, with their full skirts and delicate tulle layers, were a fitting complement to the Princess's own attire. The bridesmaids' outfits, like the Princess's, were an embodiment of the romantic and timeless style that defined the Royal Wedding of 1947. This photograph captures a moment of joy and celebration, as the newlywed Princess and her bridesmaids prepare to depart from Buckingham Palace and embark on the next chapter of their lives. The elegance and sophistication of their outfits, inspired by the art and history of the Palace, serve as a testament to the enduring allure of royal fashion and the magic of a Royal Wedding.
