Rokele Village, Sierra Leone, West Africa (circa 1910): A Glimpse into the Past This evocative photograph captures the serene beauty and simple way of life in Rokele Village, located in the Western Province of Sierra Leone, West Africa, around the turn of the twentieth century. The image transports us back in time, offering a rare glimpse into the daily lives of the native inhabitants during the 1910s. The scene is dominated by the towering, lush trees that surround the village, their branches reaching out to form a canopy over the thatched huts. The trees, with their vibrant green leaves, provide a stark contrast to the rustic, straw-roofed huts, which are dotted throughout the village. The village is situated near a body of water, with several boats tied to the shore, suggesting that the community relies on fishing and water transportation for their livelihood. The villagers are likely engaged in their daily activities, tending to their crops or attending to their domestic chores. The women, dressed in traditional African garments, can be seen carrying water from the well or preparing meals over open fires. The men, meanwhile, may be repairing their boats or working in the fields. Despite the primitive living conditions, there is a sense of tranquility and community in this image. The villagers appear content in their surroundings, living in harmony with nature and each other. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a time when life was simpler, and the connection to the land and community was stronger. Rokele Village, with its beautiful natural setting and resilient inhabitants, offers a unique window into the rich cultural heritage of Sierra Leone and West Africa during the early 1900s.
