EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the grandeur of the RMS Tartar, a Royal Mail Steamer that sailed the seas in 1883. The intricate details of the ship's design are beautifully depicted, showcasing the Union Steam-ship Company's commitment to luxury and elegance. Inset within the print is a glimpse into the opulent Dining Saloon on board, where passengers would have enjoyed exquisite meals while traveling in style.
The history of the Tartar is as fascinating as its depiction in this print. Launched in 1883, it faithfully served the Union company until 1897 when it was acquired by the Canadian Pacific Line. Unfortunately, its fate took a turn for the worse in 1908 when it was scrapped due to damage sustained from running aground.
This print serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era when steamships ruled the oceans and travel was an experience filled with glamour and adventure. It encapsulates not only a piece of maritime history but also evokes nostalgia for a time when journeys were made with grace and sophistication aboard magnificent vessels like the RMS Tartar.
