EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is seen engaging in a warm interaction with the local crowd during her historic West Indies tour of 1966. The Queen, dressed in a elegant floral dress and a matching hat, is surrounded by children, reaching out to touch her gown and smile up at her. In the background, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, stands with a group of local dignitaries, observing the scene with a look of approval. The tour, which took place from February to March 1966, marked the Queen's first visit to the Caribbean as monarch. During her travels, she visited eleven countries in the region, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. The tour was significant as it came at a time when the Windrush generation was beginning to settle in the UK, and the relationship between the UK and its former colonies was evolving. The photograph was likely taken on the island of St. Vincent, where the Queen and Prince Philip were welcomed with great enthusiasm by the local population. The visit included a state reception, a tour of Fort Charlotte, and a visit to a primary school. The warm reception the Queen received during her tour was a testament to the enduring ties between the UK and its former colonies in the Caribbean. This photograph captures a moment of connection between the Queen and the people of St. Vincent, a reminder of the historical significance of the West Indies tour and the enduring relationship between the UK and the Caribbean.
