Plate 6: Pyrocephalus rubinus, the Vermilion Flycatcher, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored lithograph by John and Elizabeth Gould, taken from the third part of Charles Darwin's "Zoology of the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle." This exquisite illustration, created in the nineteenth century, showcases the vibrant plumage and distinctive crest of this New World flycatcher. The bird is perched confidently on a slender branch, its bright red breast and underparts contrasting sharply with its brown upperparts and wings. John Gould, a renowned English publisher and printmaker, and his wife Elizabeth, an accomplished artist, collaborated on this series of bird illustrations for Darwin's groundbreaking work. The intricate details of the Vermilion Flycatcher's anatomy are beautifully rendered, from its curved beak to its long, graduated tail feathers. The H.M.S. Beagle, under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy, embarked on a five-year voyage of exploration and scientific discovery in 1831. Darwin, as the ship's naturalist, collected an unprecedented amount of data on the natural history of various regions visited during the voyage. The publication of Darwin's "Zoology" series, featuring the illustrations by the Goulds, was a significant contribution to the scientific community and helped to advance the understanding of the natural world during the 19th century.
