EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the essence of Stowitts, a renowned character dancer who graced the stages of London's most prestigious theatres during the Roaring Twenties. The image, taken in 1923, shows Stowitts in the prime of his career, exuding confidence and charisma. He had made a name for himself at Charles Cochrans Mayfair and Montmartre, performing at the New Oxford Theatre. The 1920s were an era of jazz, excitement, and innovation, and Stowitts embodied the spirit of the times. His unique style of dancing, a blend of traditional ballet techniques and modern jazz moves, was a breath of fresh air in the world of dance. The photograph captures the essence of this fusion, with Stowitts poised in mid-movement, his body twisted and contorted in a way that defied the conventions of the time. The image is a testament to the vibrant and dynamic world of London's theatre scene during the 1920s. The New Oxford Theatre was a hub of creativity and artistic expression, and Stowitts was one of its most beloved and celebrated performers. The photograph was published in various magazines of the time, further cementing his status as a cultural icon. Despite the passage of time, this portrait continues to captivate and inspire, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of jazz, dance, and artistic innovation.
