This exquisite illustration showcases the majestic beauty of the Long-leaf Pine (Pinus palustris Miller), a coniferous tree native to the southeastern United States. Dating back to the 18th century, this illustration is an exceptional example of botanical art from the time, created by the skilled hand of German botanical artist Georg Dionysius Ehret. The Long-leaf Pine is a member of the Pinaceae family, which also includes familiar trees such as the spruce, fir, and hemlock. As a gymnosperm, it bears its seeds in cones, which are prominently featured in this illustration. The cones of the Long-leaf Pine are large and heavy, with a distinctive shape and intricate structure. The scales of the cone are covered in small, sharp spines, and the seeds are protected by a thin, papery wing. The Long-leaf Pine is easily recognizable by its long, slender needles, which can grow up to 12 inches in length. The needles are arranged in bundles of three, giving the tree a distinctive appearance. The tree itself can grow to be quite large, with some individuals reaching heights of over 100 feet and living for up to 500 years.
