EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the serene scene of an Indian boatman skillfully navigating his old wooden boat along the sacred ghats of Varanasi, India, in the year 1987. The River Ganges, a lifeline for millions, flows gently in the background, reflecting the early morning light. The ghats, a series of steps leading down to the riverbank, are a popular place for bathing and performing religious rituals, as evidenced by the figures in the water. The boatman, with his oars in hand, is a common sight in this holy city, also known as Banaras or Benares. Located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi is renowned for its ancient temples and spiritual significance. The river Ganges, considered sacred in Hinduism, is believed to purify the soul and bring salvation. This image, taken in the 1980s, offers a glimpse into the timeless traditions and daily life along the ghats of Varanasi, making it a valuable document of this unique and culturally rich region.
