EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning marble bust represents Philip V of Macedon (238-179 BC), a king who ruled over the ancient kingdom of Macedon from 221 to 179 BC. The bust, now housed in the National Roman Museum in Rome, is a Roman copy from the epoch of Hadrian (117-138 AD), but it is believed to be based on an original Greek sculpture from around 200 BC. Philip V was the last great king of the Antigonid Dynasty, which had ruled Macedon since the death of Antigonus I Monophthalmos in 221 BC. During his reign, Philip faced numerous challenges, both from within his own kingdom and from external forces. He was engaged in a long-standing conflict with the Roman Republic, which sought to expand its influence in the eastern Mediterranean. Philip's military campaigns against the Romans, as well as against other Greek city-states, made him a formidable figure in the ancient world. Despite his military prowess, Philip is also remembered for his patronage of the arts and his efforts to promote cultural exchange between Greece and Macedonia. This is reflected in the high-quality craftsmanship of this bust, which captures the king's strong, determined face and the intricate details of his hair and beard. The bust's provenance from the National Roman Museum in Rome, a major institution dedicated to preserving the art and history of ancient Rome and Italy, further underscores its historical significance. The bust is made of lunense marble, a type of white marble that was highly prized in ancient times for its beauty and durability. The intricacies of the carving and the subtlety of the details make this a truly remarkable work of art, one that continues to captivate viewers with its historical and artistic significance.
