EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a United States Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom jet, specifically aircraft number 155847, with unit code AE and call sign 110, assigned to VF-41, embarked on the USS Roosevelt during the year 1976. The F-4J Phantom was part of Carrier Air Wing 103, with the designation AC-207. In February 1991, this aircraft was upgraded to an F-4S and later withdrawn from use at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina. In 1991, the F-4J Phantom was converted into a QF-4S drone for further use in aviation research and testing. However, on 22 October 2003, this historical aircraft was unfortunately written off in a ground accident and its wreck was subsequently dumped off San Nicholas Island, California. This photograph captures a moment in time of the F-4J Phantom's illustrious career in the United States Navy, showcasing the power and grace of this iconic aeronautical machine.
