EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the United States Navy's Grumman C-2A Greyhound aircraft, specifically identified as 152789 (msn, base code RG, call sign 404), of the fleet logistics support squadron VRC-50. The image is believed to have been taken around 1970. The Grumman C-2A Greyhound is a twin-engine, turboprop transport aircraft, designed and manufactured by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. It was primarily used for the transport of cargo and passengers between ships at sea and naval bases. The Greyhound's distinctive features include its high-wing configuration, T-tail, and large cargo door. Its versatile design allowed it to operate from short and unimproved runways, making it an essential asset for naval aviation. The aircraft's twin engines, located on the rear fuselage, provide ample power for short takeoffs and landings. The United States Navy's VRC-50, also known as the "Rawhides," was one of the squadrons that operated the Grumman C-2A Greyhound. The squadron was based at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California, and provided logistical support to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The squadron's Greyhounds were used to transport personnel, mail, and supplies between ships and naval bases, ensuring the smooth operation of the fleet. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of naval aviation and the vital role that the Grumman C-2A Greyhound played in supporting the United States Navy's operations at sea.
