EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Tipsy B G-AFKP (msn 05), a vintage aircraft that graced the skies above Cowes on the Isle of Wight around 1949. Built in 1938 as a Tipsy B, this aircraft was characterized by a smaller rudder and a lower all-up weight compared to its subsequent iterations, such as the Tipsy Trainer 1 (from msn 09 onwards). At the time of this image, G-AFKP was still in its original form, displaying the classic lines and elegance of a bygone era. The Tipsy B was a popular training aircraft during the late 1930s and 1940s, with over 1,000 examples produced. However, the history of this particular aircraft took an unexpected turn. After serving in the UK, G-AFKP was exported to Sudan in 1952. Unfortunately, it met its end in a crash that same year. Despite its tragic end, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the aircraft's grace and beauty during its time at Cowes. This image offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a window into the world of aviation during the late 1940s. The Tipsy B, with its distinctive design and rich history, continues to captivate aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike, making this photograph a valuable addition to any collection.
